Lab Information

The Physical Space

Our lab is in ETEC, room 260-O. It is a small space, but one I’ve strived to make as nice as possible. Access is controlled by your univeristy ID card, which you will setup access to during onboarding. There are four chairs and four mac minis that you may work from. I expect students to respect this space.

Rules for 260-O

Meetings

All lab members are expected to attend regular group meetings. The exact meeting place and time will change from semester-to-semester, so follow the Slack channel for updates. I expect you to make every effort to be in-person for these meetings; while I will make effort to include virtual particpiants, I cannot guarantee as this depends on the availability of rooms with the appropriate equiptment.

Each group meeting will include the following components:

  1. Brief updates. In a few sentences, state what you’ve worked since the last meeting. This is a chance for other lab members to learn about what it is you are working on.

  2. Updates and announcements. This is our opportunity to share information about submissions, opportunities, and deadlines.

  3. A presentation. All students will present during a group meeting in the semester. I will sometimes present. Other times I will have invited speakers. These presentations are meant to be informal, and are opportunities to receive feedback and discuss your work. This is also a great opportunity to practice and get feedback on upcoming conference talks! Presentations should aim to be about 15-25 minutes in length.

I also expect all students to meet with me one-on-one throughout the semester (every 2 weeks for undergrads, every week for grad students). You will schedule these meetings as part of your onboarding process.

Communication

Our lab has several channels of communication.

The first is in-person communication. Nothing really beats it for efficiency. This is why being in the lab is important. If I am in my office (363-B), feel free to come get me, even if my door is closed (though listen in case I’m in a meeting or recording a lecture). I will aim to stop by 260-O whever I’m in the office.

The second channel is through regular group meetings. This is a good oppotunity to solicit feedback from your peers.

The third channel is regular meetings with me. This is a chance to raise issues and talk about progress.

Finally, I make use of Slack for communication within the lab. All lab members are expected to be active on slack. Announcements regarding group meetings will be made on Slack. I will also use this space to share resources such as new research, as well as other opportuniteis to be awware of. I will also use Slack direct messages to contact you, and I will generally repond to Slack messages quicker than email.
