Onboarding
Welcome to the lab! Here I maintain a list of things that I anticipate of your first week in order to get started in the lab as quickly as possible. As new members, please complete all tasks listed here.
Create a bookmark to the lab manual so that you can refer back to it throughout your time in the lab.
Email me a request to join the Slack channel. In the email subject line, write “Request to join InfoEco Slack”. In the email body, include your name, and also list the email that you would like to be associated with the slack account.
Once you have been granted access to slack, long in, fill our contact information in your slack profile, and post a message introducing yourself in #general
Add your name to the lab website. Currently, this is just a page on my personal website. If you do not have it already, create a GitHub account. Go to the GitHub repository for my website (linked here). Navigate to the file in “/_pages/lab.md”. This is a markdown file, which is a kind of text file that makes nice formatting on GitHub. Click the edit button, which is the pencil symbol in the top-right of the file viewer. Once you are editing, scroll down and find the right list depending on your level (e.g., phd, undergrad, etc.). Under the appropriate header, add your name. Now, click “commit changeS” in the top right. You MUST select the option “Create a new branch for this request and start a pull request”. Once you do that, click “propose changes”. This will bring up the option to add a pull request. In this new window, write down a note detailing the change you want to make and click “Create pull request”. This will send the changes for me to review and approve.
Request keycard access. This email should be addressed to Lisa (lgiovannangelo@albany
.edu), and you should CC me to this email. The subject line of this email should read “Request for keycard access to 260-O”. CC me to this email. In the email body, you should describe the request, and provide your NetID and your UAlbany ID. Make a new Google Doc, title it something like “InfoEco Lab - Notes”. This will be a document you will use throughout your time in the Lab to keep notes and for us to record tasks and meeting minutes. Make a sharable link (those with the link should be editors).
Send me a direct message on Slack to setup a regular meeting time. In this message, include the times that you are available to meet each week and I will schedule based on which aligns with my schedule. Also include the notes document you make in the previous item.
Read the “Lab Information” and “Expectations” pages in this manual. Review the other pages at your leisure.
Setup a regular schedule to be in the lab. Send this to me via a Slack direct message (See the “Expectations” page for the number of hours I expect you to be in the lab). I would prefer schedules to be spread over at least 2 days, but I am flexible.
